Val di Cornia Parks

The Val di Cornia Parks constitute a system of protected areas that enhances the environmental characteristics of an area rich in history and archaeology, as well as landscape and nature.

Archaeological Museum of Baratti and Populonia (Piombino)

It covers about 80 hectares between the promontory of Piombino and the Gulf of Baratti. It is divided into an upper town, the acropolis located on the promontory, and a lower town, at sea level centred on port activities where the Necropolis of San Cerbone and the Podere Casone are located. A path connects the visitor centre to the experimental archaeology laboratory from where a nature trail and the Via delle Cave (Quarry Route) lead to the Necropolis of the Caves.

Archaeological Museum of the Populonia Territory (Piombino)

It exhibits over two thousand items, including prehistoric artefacts, finds from the excavations of the Etruscan necropolis in Populonia, and materials from the Roman period. Culturally and functionally linked to the Baratti Archaeological Park, the museum represents the main exhibition pole of the Val di Cornia Park System.

San Silvestro Archaeo-mineral Park (Campiglia Marittima)

The Temperino mine, an underground gallery showing the evolution of mining techniques from ancient times to the present day, the medieval village of Rocca San Silvestro, built in the 10th and 11th centuries by miners and smelters of the time, and numerous archaeo-mining trekking routes make this park a true open-air archive of mining history.

Fortress of Campiglia Marittima

Over 300 hectares typical of the upper Maremma of the early 20th century: dunes, wetlands, agricultural clearings, wooded areas and a rare portion of coastal wet forest. The centuries-old oak forest, a relict of the lowland forests that once covered much of the coast, is worth seeing.

The Rimigliano Coastal Park (San Vincenzo).

150 hectares of light-coloured sand and Mediterranean scrub extraordinary for its variety of species, shapes and colours, dominated by holm oaks and stretches of shady pine forest.

The Montioni Natural Park (Suvereto, Piombino,Campiglia Marittima)

Area associated with mining, coal production and logging. Approximately 7000 hectares of forest where you can venture on the traces left by shepherds and miners, loggers and charcoal burners.

The Poggio Neri Forest Park (Sassetta)

Equipped paths wind through this area among magnificent specimens of chestnut trees, holm oaks and oaks. Inside, there is the Museo del Bosco, where the tools of the forest trades are presented, and a faithful reconstruction of the world of the charcoal burners.
